The story behind Arbitrum

Offchain Labs launched Arbitrum One in 2021 and, in March 2023, airdropped ARB to the people who had actually used the network, handing meaningful control to a newly formed Arbitrum DAO rather than keeping it in-house.

Later technical upgrades brought the Nitro stack, the Orbit framework that lets other teams launch their own custom chains anchored to Arbitrum, and Stylus, which lets developers write contracts in Rust and C++ alongside the usual Solidity.

What ARB is used for

Holding ARB means holding a governance stake: you can vote on treasury grants, protocol upgrades and appointments to the security council empowered to act in emergencies. Day-to-day gas on Arbitrum itself is paid in ETH, not ARB, so the token's job is stewardship and treasury allocation rather than covering the cost of your own transactions.
