The story behind Celo

cLabs launched Celo in 2020 as its own independent Layer-1, with financial access in emerging markets as the explicit priority from the outset, and issued local-currency stablecoins such as cUSD, cEUR and cREAL to make that access concrete rather than aspirational.

In 2025 the network migrated from an independent chain to an Ethereum Layer-2 built on the OP Stack, trading some of its original architectural independence for closer alignment with the broader, more liquid Ethereum ecosystem.
