The story behind Gnosis

Martin Köppelmann and Stefan George founded Gnosis in 2015 and ran one of Ethereum's earliest token sales in 2017 to fund prediction market infrastructure, at a time when few people outside the Ethereum community had heard of the concept. The team's most consequential work turned out to be something else entirely: Gnosis Safe, now the standard multisig custody contract used by DAOs and treasuries across the industry to protect shared funds.

It later produced CoW Protocol, a trading system designed to protect users from front-running, and in 2022 launched the Gnosis Chain network itself.

What GNO is used for

You can stake GNO to help validate Gnosis Chain and vote on GnosisDAO's treasury and protocol decisions, giving token holders a direct say over how a multi-product ecosystem is funded and directed. Curiously, gas on Gnosis Chain itself is paid in a dollar-pegged stablecoin rather than GNO, so the token's role is concentrated in staking and governance rather than everyday transaction fees.

Gnosis in the market today

Gnosis has produced more widely adopted infrastructure — Safe and CoW Protocol chief among it — than almost any project of its size, even though GNO itself remains a mid-cap asset rather than a headline name. That gap between influence and market value is a genuine oddity: the tools it built underpin large amounts of value elsewhere in DeFi, while the token that funds their development trades far more modestly.
