The story behind Mantle

Mantle emerged in 2023 from the merger of BitDAO, which held a multi-billion-dollar treasury seeded by the Bybit exchange, with a new rollup project — an unusual origin story that gave a brand-new Layer-2 an enormous balance sheet from day one rather than having to build one up through fees over years. The old BIT token converted into MNT as part of that merger.

Mantle's modular design initially used EigenDA, a separate data-availability network, to keep transaction costs down rather than relying entirely on Ethereum for that function.

What MNT is used for

MNT pays your gas fees for any transaction on the Mantle network, and holding it lets you vote in governance over how the treasury — built from that BitDAO merger — actually gets deployed, which is a meaningfully different decision than most rollup tokens ask their holders to make. The ecosystem built around it includes mETH, a liquid staking token, and an on-chain fund that invests part of the treasury directly.

Mantle in the market today

Mantle stands out among Ethereum rollups less for its raw transaction volume than for the sheer size of the treasury its holders govern, which gives it more balance-sheet flexibility than most competing Layer-2 networks enjoy.

That flexibility cuts both ways, though: Mantle's reputation is now closely tied to how well that treasury gets managed, and poor deployment decisions would weigh on the token more directly than they would for a rollup with no treasury at all.
