The story behind Sky

MakerDAO rebranded to Sky in August 2024 under founder Rune Christensen's Endgame plan, a long-signalled restructuring that converted the old MKR token into SKY at a rate of 24,000 to one and introduced a new stablecoin, USDS, alongside the existing DAI.

The plan also spawned semi-independent subsidiaries nicknamed 'Stars', including the Spark lending protocol, each meant to operate with more autonomy than a single monolithic DAO could easily manage.

What SKY is used for

As a SKY holder, you vote on which assets can back USDS, what savings rates the protocol offers, and the risk parameters that govern how much collateral is required against each loan. You can also stake SKY for rewards funded by protocol revenue, and the token itself absorbs the protocol's surplus or deficit over time through periodic buybacks and auctions, making it a direct financial stake in how well the system is run.

Sky in the market today

Sky governs the largest decentralised stablecoin system in DeFi and is one of the biggest holders of tokenised Treasuries anywhere in the space. The 2024 rebrand split community opinion sharply, though, and some long-time users continue to prefer thinking and speaking in terms of the legacy MKR framing rather than adopting the new name and conversion rate.
