BNB (BNB): questions and answers

Every answer below is written from the sources listed at the end of this page, with the date each one was checked.

The question that decides how you read BNB

BNB is the clearest test case in crypto of a specific question: can an asset designed to serve one company's business ever become a neutral settlement layer for everyone else?

BNB did not start as a blockchain asset at all. It launched in 2017 as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum whose purpose was to discount trading fees on a single exchange — a loyalty instrument with a token wrapper.

The tension arrived when that instrument was promoted. In 2019 BNB moved to its own chain, and in 2020 a second, Ethereum-compatible chain was added beside it. A token whose value came from one company's fee schedule was now the gas that strangers had to buy to use a public network.

What is still unsettled

Validator decentralisation is the open question, and it resists a clean answer. The set has grown and the selection process has been formalised, but public analyses still describe a concentrated group. Whether the post-2023 compliance regime loosens or tightens the exchange's influence over the chain is not something the chain's own documentation can settle.

What this means when you swap BNB

The expensive mistake with BNB is picking the wrong network. BNB exists as a native coin on the older Beacon Chain, as a BEP-20 asset on BNB Smart Chain, and historically existed as an ERC-20 on Ethereum before the 2019 migration. Deposits to the older chain typically require a memo; deposits to the smart chain use a `0x` address and no memo at all.

That `0x` address is the trap. It looks identical to an Ethereum or Avalanche address, so the string alone never tells you which network you are on. Confirm the network in the receiving service's deposit instructions, then confirm it again before you send — cross-network sends between these chains are not automatically recoverable.

Common BNB questions

How do I swap BNB (BNB) instantly on Monivo?
Pick BNB as the asset you want to receive, choose what you're paying with, paste your wallet address, and confirm. Monivo routes your order to the provider offering the best rate, and most swaps complete in under 10 minutes — no account needed.
Can I swap BNB with no KYC?
Yes. Crypto-to-crypto swaps of BNB on Monivo require no identity verification and no sign-up. Only fiat purchases (card or bank transfer) require KYC, because banks and payment processors mandate it.
Is swapping BNB on Monivo non-custodial?
Yes. Monivo never holds your funds. BNB is sent directly to the wallet address you provide, so you stay in control the whole time.
Which network does BNB use here?
Monivo supports BNB on the BSC network. Always double-check that your receiving wallet supports this network before confirming.
What fees apply when I swap BNB?
Monivo adds zero fees on top. The quote you see already reflects the best aggregated rate across connected providers, including their network and processing costs — all fees are included in the shown amount.
Is BEP-20 BNB the same as ERC-20 BNB?
No. They are different networks that happen to share an address format. BNB migrated off Ethereum to its own chains in 2019, and sending to the wrong one usually means the receiving platform cannot credit you automatically. Always match the network named in the deposit instructions.
Do BNB deposits need a memo?
It depends on the chain. Deposits on the older Beacon Chain generally require a memo to identify you; deposits on BNB Smart Chain use a `0x` address and no memo. Follow the receiving service's instructions rather than assuming from a previous transfer.
What does the BNB burn actually do?
It permanently removes coins from supply, through a scheduled formula-based burn and a portion of transaction fees destroyed at protocol level. Both are verifiable on-chain. Burning reduces supply; it does not create any entitlement or promise about price.
