Dogecoin (DOGE): questions and answers

The question that decides how you read Dogecoin
The joke is well known. The part worth knowing is how a coin created as a parody ended up permanently welded to another network's mining power in order to survive.
Dogecoin existed as a tweet before it existed as software. Jackson Palmer, then a marketer at Adobe, joked about investing in it and registered the domain about a week later. Billy Markus, an IBM software developer, had already been trying and failing to build a friendlier digital currency; he found the site, offered to write the code, and forked it from existing sources.
The two had never met in person. The project was coordinated remotely between Sydney and Portland.
What is still unsettled
Dogecoin's two structural questions are the same ones it created in 2014. Issuance is uncapped at a fixed 10,000 DOGE per block, so supply grows forever in absolute terms while the inflation rate declines; and its security is not independent, because merged mining ties it to decisions made by Litecoin's miners. Neither is a flaw exactly — both are trade-offs the network took deliberately — but neither has been revisited.
What this means when you swap DOGE
Blocks target one minute, so confirmations come quickly and services usually require a generous number of them. Fees have historically been small in absolute terms, which is what made tipping viable, and the minimum relay fee has been reduced over the years by client releases rather than by fee markets.
The shared lineage with Litecoin is exactly why care is needed: the two chains use the same mining algorithm and merged mining, but their addresses are not interchangeable. DOGE sent to a Litecoin or Bitcoin address is not recoverable. There is no memo field.
Common DOGE questions
- How do I swap Dogecoin (DOGE) instantly on Monivo?
- Pick DOGE as the asset you want to receive, choose what you're paying with, paste your wallet address, and confirm. Monivo routes your order to the provider offering the best rate, and most swaps complete in under 10 minutes — no account needed.
- Can I swap DOGE with no KYC?
- Yes. Crypto-to-crypto swaps of DOGE on Monivo require no identity verification and no sign-up. Only fiat purchases (card or bank transfer) require KYC, because banks and payment processors mandate it.
- Is swapping Dogecoin on Monivo non-custodial?
- Yes. Monivo never holds your funds. DOGE is sent directly to the wallet address you provide, so you stay in control the whole time.
- Which network does DOGE use here?
- Monivo supports Dogecoin on the DOGE network. Always double-check that your receiving wallet supports this network before confirming.
- What fees apply when I swap DOGE?
- Monivo adds zero fees on top. The quote you see already reflects the best aggregated rate across connected providers, including their network and processing costs — all fees are included in the shown amount.
- Is Dogecoin secured by its own miners?
- Partly. Since the 2014 merged-mining fork, Litecoin miners can produce Dogecoin blocks alongside Litecoin blocks at no extra cost, and most of Dogecoin's hashrate comes from that arrangement. It makes the chain far more expensive to attack than it was in 2014, but the security is shared rather than independent.
- Does Dogecoin have a supply limit?
- No. Issuance is fixed at 10,000 DOGE per block with no cap, so the supply grows by a constant amount each year while the percentage rate of new issuance falls over time. That is a deliberate design choice, not an oversight.
