Filecoin (FIL): questions and answers

Every answer below is written from the sources listed at the end of this page, with the date each one was checked.

The question that decides how you read Filecoin

Filecoin pays providers for proving they hold data. The awkward question the network had to confront is what happens when the profitable thing to prove is that you are holding nothing in particular.

Proof-of-work mining spends electricity on arithmetic with no value outside the protocol. Filecoin's premise was that the same security budget could buy something useful: if miners must prove they are storing real data, the network's expenditure becomes storage capacity rather than heat.

Turning that into a protocol took years, because 'prove you are storing this' is a much harder cryptographic statement than 'prove you did this much work'.

What is still unsettled

The economic question is whether paid storage demand grows faster than token emissions and vesting unlocks release supply. Forward-looking analyses of that balance are speculation, and Monivo treats them as such. The structural question — whether proving storage is the same as being a storage business — is still being answered by adoption rather than by cryptography.

What this means when you swap FIL

Filecoin has more address types than almost any network you will meet: `f0` identifiers, `f1` and `f3` key-based addresses, `f2` actor addresses, and `f4` delegated addresses including the `f410` form that corresponds to an Ethereum-style `0x` address. Wallets built for EVM chains understand the `f410`/`0x` space and do not recognise native `f1` or `f3` addresses.

Moving between those spaces needs a specific forwarder contract rather than an ordinary transfer, and the project's own documentation warns that FIL on the Filecoin EVM is not a bridged cross-chain asset. Before depositing, check which address form the receiving service publishes and send to exactly that form.

Common FIL questions

How do I swap Filecoin (FIL) instantly on Monivo?
Pick FIL as the asset you want to receive, choose what you're paying with, paste your wallet address, and confirm. Monivo routes your order to the provider offering the best rate, and most swaps complete in under 10 minutes — no account needed.
Can I swap FIL with no KYC?
Yes. Crypto-to-crypto swaps of FIL on Monivo require no identity verification and no sign-up. Only fiat purchases (card or bank transfer) require KYC, because banks and payment processors mandate it.
Is swapping Filecoin on Monivo non-custodial?
Yes. Monivo never holds your funds. FIL is sent directly to the wallet address you provide, so you stay in control the whole time.
Which network does FIL use here?
Monivo supports Filecoin on the Filecoin network. Always double-check that your receiving wallet supports this network before confirming.
What fees apply when I swap FIL?
Monivo adds zero fees on top. The quote you see already reflects the best aggregated rate across connected providers, including their network and processing costs — all fees are included in the shown amount.
Why does Filecoin have so many address formats?
Different address classes identify different things: key-controlled accounts, on-chain actors, short numeric identifiers, and delegated addresses that map to Ethereum-style `0x` form for the Filecoin EVM. They are not interchangeable, so use the exact form the recipient gives you.
Can I send FIL from a native wallet to a MetaMask address?
Not with an ordinary transfer. Native `f1` or `f3` addresses and EVM-style `f410`/`0x` addresses live in different address spaces, and moving between them uses a dedicated forwarder contract documented by the project. Sending directly can leave funds inaccessible.
Is FIL on the Filecoin EVM a bridged token?
No. It is the same native FIL on the same network, reachable through an Ethereum-compatible runtime. Filecoin's documentation is explicit that assets on Filecoin are not available on other networks, so treat any cross-chain version as a separate bridged asset.
