USD Coin (Ethereum) (USDC): questions and answers

The question that decides how you read USD Coin (Ethereum)
USDC's pitch is that a stablecoin can be safe by being conventional. March 2023 asked the obvious follow-up: safe from what, exactly?
USDC was built as the respectable alternative — regulated money-transmission licences, named custodians, monthly attestations, reserves in cash and Treasuries rather than in undisclosed instruments. Everything about it is designed to be checkable.
That choice has a shadow. Reserves held in real banks inherit real banking risk, and reserves held in compliance with sanctions inherit the power to freeze. Conventional safety is still exposure to conventional failure.
What is still unsettled
No full audit of reserves under the standards applied to public company financial statements has been published, and the attestation-versus-audit distinction remains contested. Separately, the March 2023 episode showed that a stablecoin's weakest link can be a bank rather than a blockchain, and no amount of on-chain design fixes that.
What this means when you swap USDC
USDC is natively issued on several networks and Circle operates its own cross-chain transfer protocol between them. Third-party bridges produce wrapped versions that are not the same asset, so 'USDC' on an unexpected chain may be a bridge's token rather than Circle's — check which one a service credits before depositing.
As with every stablecoin, you need the destination chain's gas asset to move your balance, and the freeze capability is real: addresses can be blocked in response to sanctions listings, and on USDC's contract the restriction applies to receiving as well as sending.
Common USDC questions
- How do I swap USD Coin (Ethereum) (USDC) instantly on Monivo?
- Pick USDC as the asset you want to receive, choose what you're paying with, paste your wallet address, and confirm. Monivo routes your order to the provider offering the best rate, and most swaps complete in under 10 minutes — no account needed.
- Can I swap USDC with no KYC?
- Yes. Crypto-to-crypto swaps of USDC on Monivo require no identity verification and no sign-up. Only fiat purchases (card or bank transfer) require KYC, because banks and payment processors mandate it.
- Is swapping USD Coin (Ethereum) on Monivo non-custodial?
- Yes. Monivo never holds your funds. USDC is sent directly to the wallet address you provide, so you stay in control the whole time.
- Which network does USDC use here?
- Monivo supports USD Coin (Ethereum) on the ETH network. Always double-check that your receiving wallet supports this network before confirming.
- What fees apply when I swap USDC?
- Monivo adds zero fees on top. The quote you see already reflects the best aggregated rate across connected providers, including their network and processing costs — all fees are included in the shown amount.
- Why did USDC fall below a dollar in March 2023?
- Circle disclosed that $3.3 billion of reserves were held at Silicon Valley Bank as it failed, and holders priced the risk those deposits were impaired. After US authorities confirmed depositors would be made whole, Circle confirmed the funds were available and the price recovered.
- Is bridged USDC the same as native USDC?
- No. Circle issues USDC natively on a set of chains; other versions are created by bridges and depend on that bridge's solvency and security. Check whether a service accepts native or bridged USDC on the chain you plan to use.
- Can USDC be frozen?
- Yes. Circle can block addresses, and has done so in response to sanctions listings. On USDC's contract the restriction applies to both sending and receiving, which is a deliberate compliance feature of a centrally issued stablecoin.
