Tether USD (Ethereum) (USDT): questions and answers

The question that decides how you read Tether USD (Ethereum)
Everyone asks whether USDT is backed. The more precise question is what 'backed' has actually meant at different points in its history, and who was able to check.
USDT exists because exchanges needed dollars they could move at internet speed while banks would not serve them. A token that claims one dollar per unit solves that instantly — but only by relocating the trust. Instead of trusting a bank you can audit, you trust an issuer's assertion about reserves you cannot see.
Every controversy in Tether's history follows from that single structural choice.
What is still unsettled
The disclosure question is still open. Attestations describe a snapshot of reserve composition at a date; an audit examines controls over a period, and Tether has not published one. Reasonable people draw different conclusions from that gap, and Monivo does not claim to resolve it — we simply note what has and has not been published.
What this means when you swap USDT
USDT is not one token. It is a separate contract on Ethereum, Tron, Solana, Avalanche and others, each with its own address format and fee behaviour. Sending the Tron version to an Ethereum address, or the reverse, is the most common way people lose stablecoins, and nothing about the balance in your wallet warns you.
Two further practicalities. Every chain requires its own gas asset, so holding only USDT on Ethereum leaves you unable to move it without ETH. And because balances can be frozen at the issuer's discretion in cooperation with authorities, USDT should be understood as a compliant instrument rather than a bearer one.
Common USDT questions
- How do I swap Tether USD (Ethereum) (USDT) instantly on Monivo?
- Pick USDT as the asset you want to receive, choose what you're paying with, paste your wallet address, and confirm. Monivo routes your order to the provider offering the best rate, and most swaps complete in under 10 minutes — no account needed.
- Can I swap USDT with no KYC?
- Yes. Crypto-to-crypto swaps of USDT on Monivo require no identity verification and no sign-up. Only fiat purchases (card or bank transfer) require KYC, because banks and payment processors mandate it.
- Is swapping Tether USD (Ethereum) on Monivo non-custodial?
- Yes. Monivo never holds your funds. USDT is sent directly to the wallet address you provide, so you stay in control the whole time.
- Which network does USDT use here?
- Monivo supports Tether USD (Ethereum) on the ETH network. Always double-check that your receiving wallet supports this network before confirming.
- What fees apply when I swap USDT?
- Monivo adds zero fees on top. The quote you see already reflects the best aggregated rate across connected providers, including their network and processing costs — all fees are included in the shown amount.
- Is USDT on Tron the same as USDT on Ethereum?
- They represent the same claim on the same issuer, but they are separate tokens on separate networks with separate addresses. Transfers do not cross automatically — sending one to an address expecting the other means the receiving service cannot credit it without manual recovery, if that is possible at all.
- Can USDT be frozen?
- Yes. The token contracts include an administrative function that lets the issuer block an address, typically used in cooperation with law enforcement. That is a design feature of a compliant, centrally issued stablecoin rather than a defect.
- Has Tether been audited?
- Tether publishes periodic attestations prepared by accountants describing reserve composition at a point in time. That is not the same as a full financial-statement audit, and no such audit has been published. Regulators have previously penalised statements about reserve backing made between 2016 and 2019.
