Stellar's most instructive moment is not its launch. It is the week its ledger forked and the fix turned into a new field of consensus research.
Jed McCaleb, who had earlier created Mt. Gox and co-founded Ripple, left Ripple after a dispute and launched Stellar in July 2014 as a non-profit alternative. The founding argument was about distribution as much as technology: mining, Stellar's founders argued, privileges the technically sophisticated and the capital-rich, so the network gave away the overwhelming majority of its initial supply instead.
What is still unsettled
Federated agreement is only as decentralised as the trust choices operators actually make. Safety depends on quorum slices overlapping well, and a validator set concentrated around a few well-known operators — historically including the foundation's own nodes — weakens exactly the property the design is meant to provide. The protocol cannot enforce good configuration; it can only make it possible.
What this means when you swap XLM
This is the asset where the memo matters. Many exchanges use one shared Stellar account for all customers and require a numeric memo to credit your deposit; sending without it does not destroy the funds, but recovery depends on that exchange's support process. Always copy both the address and the memo, and use a muxed address (`M…`) if your counterparty offers one.
Transfers settle in roughly three to five seconds and cost fractions of a cent. Accounts must hold a small minimum XLM balance to exist, and receiving a non-XLM Stellar asset requires establishing a trustline for it first.
