Zcash (ZEC): questions and answers

Every answer below is written from the sources listed at the end of this page, with the date each one was checked.

The question that decides how you read Zcash

Zcash's founding problem was not cryptography. It was that the cryptography required generating a secret that, if anyone kept a copy, could quietly counterfeit money forever.

The protocol came out of peer-reviewed academic work and was commercialised by a company. To make its zero-knowledge proofs work, the original system needed public parameters generated from secret values — the 'toxic waste'. Anyone holding that secret could create proofs for transactions that never happened. The problem was not whether the maths worked; it was how to convince the world that nobody kept the key.

What is still unsettled

Most ZEC has historically sat in transparent addresses, which means the chain's privacy has often been a minority feature of its own network. A live draft proposal would stop new value entering the transparent pool altogether, pushing the chain toward shielded-by-default. It is a draft, not an activated change, and the argument over it is exactly the argument Zcash has been having since launch.

What this means when you swap ZEC

The single thing worth checking before any ZEC transfer is which kind of address you are sending to. Transparent addresses (`t…`) behave like Bitcoin and offer no privacy; shielded addresses hide amounts and parties. Unified Addresses bundle several types together so wallets can choose the best one they support.

The classic mistake is sending shielded ZEC to a service that only credits transparent deposits — recovery then depends on that service's support team. Memos exist, but only between shielded senders and receivers; they are not a substitute for an exchange destination tag. Block times are Bitcoin-like at roughly 75 seconds, and many services wait for a solid number of confirmations.

Common ZEC questions

How do I swap Zcash (ZEC) instantly on Monivo?
Pick ZEC as the asset you want to receive, choose what you're paying with, paste your wallet address, and confirm. Monivo routes your order to the provider offering the best rate, and most swaps complete in under 10 minutes — no account needed.
Can I swap ZEC with no KYC?
Yes. Crypto-to-crypto swaps of ZEC on Monivo require no identity verification and no sign-up. Only fiat purchases (card or bank transfer) require KYC, because banks and payment processors mandate it.
Is swapping Zcash on Monivo non-custodial?
Yes. Monivo never holds your funds. ZEC is sent directly to the wallet address you provide, so you stay in control the whole time.
Which network does ZEC use here?
Monivo supports Zcash on the ZEC network. Always double-check that your receiving wallet supports this network before confirming.
What fees apply when I swap ZEC?
Monivo adds zero fees on top. The quote you see already reflects the strongest quote we found across connected providers, including their network and processing costs — all fees are included in the shown amount.
Is a Zcash transaction private by default?
Not necessarily. Zcash supports both transparent addresses, which are as public as Bitcoin, and shielded addresses, which hide amounts and parties. Privacy depends on the address type on both ends of the transfer, so check what you are sending to.
Can I send shielded ZEC to any exchange?
Not always. Some services credit only transparent deposits, and a shielded send to them may need manual intervention to resolve. Use the deposit address exactly as the receiving service provides it, and note that shielded memos are not the same thing as a destination tag.
