Arweave (AR): questions and answers

The question that decides how you read Arweave
Paying once to store something forever is an economic claim, not a technical one. Arweave's design is an argument that the economics can be made to work.
Every other storage network charges rent, because storage costs recur. That model works while someone keeps paying and fails the moment they stop — which is exactly the failure mode for archives, public records and anything meant to outlive its uploader.
Arweave's founding move was to invert the payment: charge a single fee large enough that, if storage costs keep falling as they have historically, the remainder can pay miners to keep the data indefinitely.
What is still unsettled
The endowment's central assumption is that storage keeps getting cheaper at something like its historical rate. Nobody can prove a multi-decade cost curve in advance, and 'permanent' is a promise measured on a timescale no cryptocurrency has yet lived through. The mechanism is well documented and publicly debated; the outcome is genuinely unknown.
What this means when you swap AR
AR transfers are ordinary wallet-to-wallet transactions and confirm in the low minutes. Data transactions are a different animal: they can move AR and pay storage at once, and each can carry up to 2KB of tag metadata.
Two practical notes. A cold wallet has no presence on-chain until it first receives AR, so signing offline and broadcasting from a connected machine is the normal pattern. And uploads routed through a gateway's optimistic cache can be dropped if they never make it into a block — for anything large or time-sensitive, use a bundling service or boost the fee.
Common AR questions
- How do I swap Arweave (AR) instantly on Monivo?
- Pick AR as the asset you want to receive, choose what you're paying with, paste your wallet address, and confirm. Monivo routes your order to the provider offering the best rate, and most swaps complete in under 10 minutes — no account needed.
- Can I swap AR with no KYC?
- Yes. Crypto-to-crypto swaps of AR on Monivo require no identity verification and no sign-up. Only fiat purchases (card or bank transfer) require KYC, because banks and payment processors mandate it.
- Is swapping Arweave on Monivo non-custodial?
- Yes. Monivo never holds your funds. AR is sent directly to the wallet address you provide, so you stay in control the whole time.
- Which network does AR use here?
- Monivo supports Arweave on the Arweave network. Always double-check that your receiving wallet supports this network before confirming.
- What fees apply when I swap AR?
- Monivo adds zero fees on top. The quote you see already reflects the best aggregated rate across connected providers, including their network and processing costs — all fees are included in the shown amount.
- Is data on Arweave really permanent?
- The design pays a one-time fee into an endowment that funds future storage, on the assumption that the cost of storing a byte keeps falling. That is a well-documented mechanism and a real economic bet — not a guarantee. Treat 'permanent' as the design intent rather than a certainty.
- Why did my Arweave upload never confirm?
- Arweave drops unmined transactions from the mempool after roughly fifty blocks, so an underpriced upload during congestion expires rather than waiting. Raising the fee with a boost multiplier, or using a bundling service, is the usual fix.
