About Arweave (AR)
Permanent storageArweave (AR) sells permanence. You pay once and the network is designed to keep your data available for at least two hundred years, funded by an endowment that pays storage providers out of the interest as hardware costs fall.
The story behind Arweave
Sam Williams built Arweave around a question nobody else was asking seriously: what would it take to make information genuinely un-deletable? The 2018 mainnet introduced the blockweave, where miners must prove they hold old data to mine new blocks, so storing history is the cost of participating. The economic bet is equally unusual — an upfront fee invested against the historical decline in storage cost per byte.
What AR is used for
AR pays for uploads, once. The permaweb hosts archived news, censorship-resistant journalism, NFT media, AI training datasets and application front-ends that cannot be taken down by a hosting provider. AO, launched in 2024, adds a computation layer on top of the permanent data.
Arweave in the market today
Arweave is a mid-cap with a genuinely distinctive product and an unfalsifiable core claim — nobody can verify a two-hundred-year guarantee. Its endowment model depends on storage costs continuing to fall at historical rates, and its permanence cuts both ways in jurisdictions that legislate a right to erasure.

The story of Arweave
Paying once to store something forever is an economic claim, not a technical one. Arweave's design is an argument that the economics can be made to work.
Why Arweave exists at all
Every other storage network charges rent, because storage costs recur. That model works while someone keeps paying and fails the moment they stop — which is exactly the failure mode for archives, public records and anything meant to outlive its uploader.
Arweave's founding move was to invert the payment: charge a single fee large enough that, if storage costs keep falling as they have historically, the remainder can pay miners to keep the data indefinitely.
The people behind it
The original yellow paper is credited to Sam Williams with Viktor Diordiiev, Lev Berman, India Raybould and Ivan Uemlianin, introducing the 'blockweave', proof of access, and the storage endowment. A later lightpaper, from December 2023, reframes the system around succinct proofs of replicated storage and a fork-based evolution process intended to preserve user rights across upgrades.
The original bet
The bet has two halves. Technically, mining rewards are tied to proving you still hold old data, not just to producing new blocks — storage, not hashing alone, is what earns. Economically, the endowment assumes long-run declines in the cost per byte of storage. If that assumption holds, one payment funds perpetual replication; if it stops holding, the model is under strain. That is the honest shape of the claim.
The turning point
The system's evolution has been away from the original single-network story toward a layered one. Gateways, naming and staking now sit on top of the base storage layer as a separate network with its own token and documentation, while the base chain continues to do the permanent-storage job. Anyone reading older explanations of Arweave should be careful about which layer is being described.
A detail most summaries leave out
Arweave's mempool drops unmined transactions after roughly fifty blocks — on the order of two hours — rather than holding them indefinitely. Tooling therefore exposes a fee 'boost' multiplier so an upload can outbid congestion. It is a small detail that explains most failed large uploads.
The question that is still open
The endowment's central assumption is that storage keeps getting cheaper at something like its historical rate. Nobody can prove a multi-decade cost curve in advance, and 'permanent' is a promise measured on a timescale no cryptocurrency has yet lived through. The mechanism is well documented and publicly debated; the outcome is genuinely unknown.
What this means when you swap AR
AR transfers are ordinary wallet-to-wallet transactions and confirm in the low minutes. Data transactions are a different animal: they can move AR and pay storage at once, and each can carry up to 2KB of tag metadata.
Two practical notes. A cold wallet has no presence on-chain until it first receives AR, so signing offline and broadcasting from a connected machine is the normal pattern. And uploads routed through a gateway's optimistic cache can be dropped if they never make it into a block — for anything large or time-sensitive, use a bundling service or boost the fee.

Fees and pricing
Monivo does not add a separate platform fee. The quoted receive amount reflects the executing provider's pricing and applicable payout costs. Your sending wallet or exchange may charge its own network or withdrawal fee. The amount shown is an estimate; fixed and floating quotes follow the provider's terms.
Monivo does not add a separate platform fee. Some partner quotes include a small affiliate margin that is retained by Monivo as a referral commission; this margin is included in the rate shown, not added on top. Provider spreads and applicable network costs are also reflected in the quoted amount.
Network fees are set by the blockchain, not by Monivo. No account, no subscription and no withdrawal charge. Live support is available 24/7.
AR swap FAQ
How do I swap Arweave (AR) instantly on Monivo?
Pick AR as the asset you want to receive, choose what you're paying with, paste your wallet address, and confirm. Monivo routes your order to the provider offering the best rate, and most swaps complete in under 10 minutes — no account needed.
Can I swap AR with no KYC?
Yes. Crypto-to-crypto swaps of AR on Monivo require no identity verification and no sign-up. Only fiat purchases (card or bank transfer) require KYC, because banks and payment processors mandate it.
Is swapping Arweave on Monivo non-custodial?
Yes. Monivo never holds your funds. AR is sent directly to the wallet address you provide, so you stay in control the whole time.
Which network does AR use here?
Monivo supports Arweave on the Arweave network. Always double-check that your receiving wallet supports this network before confirming.
What fees apply when I swap AR?
Monivo adds zero fees on top. The quote you see already reflects the strongest quote we found across connected providers, including their network and processing costs — all fees are included in the shown amount.
Is data on Arweave really permanent?
The design pays a one-time fee into an endowment that funds future storage, on the assumption that the cost of storing a byte keeps falling. That is a well-documented mechanism and a real economic bet — not a guarantee. Treat 'permanent' as the design intent rather than a certainty.
Why did my Arweave upload never confirm?
Arweave drops unmined transactions from the mempool after roughly fifty blocks, so an underpriced upload during congestion expires rather than waiting. Raising the fee with a boost multiplier, or using a bundling service, is the usual fix.
