About Litecoin (LTC)

Layer-1 blockchain

Litecoin (LTC) is one of the oldest cryptocurrencies still running, a Bitcoin fork with faster blocks, an 84 million coin cap and the Scrypt mining algorithm, built from day one as everyday payment money rather than digital gold.

The story behind Litecoin

Charlie Lee was working as a Google engineer in October 2011 when he released Litecoin, explicitly pitching it as silver to Bitcoin's gold — lighter, faster, meant for spending rather than saving. Over the years the chain has quietly served as Bitcoin's proving ground: it adopted Segregated Witness in 2017 before Bitcoin itself did, testing the upgrade's safety on a smaller, less consequential network first.

In 2022 it added an optional MimbleWimble privacy extension without disrupting the millions of existing transparent addresses already in use.

What LTC is used for

You would use LTC for low-fee transfers and merchant payments that confirm in about two and a half minutes, faster than Bitcoin's ten. It has long served as a common on-ramp asset on exchanges, and it is merge-mined alongside Dogecoin, meaning the same mining hardware secures both chains at once. Its optional privacy feature lets you shield transaction amounts on the occasions that calls for it, without forcing that choice on every transaction.

Litecoin in the market today

Litecoin has one of the longest continuous trading histories in the industry and stays widely listed on exchanges, a testament to sheer durability if nothing else. What has changed is its relevance: the payments narrative it once occupied almost alone has been split apart by faster chains and by dollar stablecoins, which now handle far more everyday value transfer than any proof-of-work payment coin.

How to buy or swap LTC

  1. Pick LTC as the asset you want to receive.
  2. Choose what you're paying with — crypto or a fiat card.
  3. Monivo compares every connected exchange and routes your order to the best available rate.
  4. Paste your wallet address and confirm — funds arrive in minutes.

The story of Litecoin

Litecoin is remembered for 'silver to Bitcoin's gold'. The more revealing story is that it was designed as a response to other altcoins, not to Bitcoin.

Why Litecoin exists at all

The launch announcement on BitcoinTalk in October 2011 spends its energy on the competition: Ixcoin, I0coin, SolidCoin, GeistGeld, Tenebrix. The complaint is consistent — large premines, unsafe changes, botched launches. Litecoin's pitch was not a better idea than Bitcoin's, it was a clean one: launch openly, keep the changes small, and do not hold back coins for yourself.

The people behind it

Charlie Lee, posting as coblee, was a software engineer at Google working on ChromeOS networking when he released Litecoin; he left roughly two years later to work in cryptocurrency full time. In his own later retelling, the motivating grievance was fairness in altcoin launches rather than any technical shortcoming in Bitcoin — a framing worth noting as the founder's recollection rather than an independently documented motive.

The original bet

The engineering bet was restraint applied consistently. Four parameters were scaled together by the same factor of four: 2.5-minute blocks, an 84 million supply cap, halving every 840,000 blocks. The one genuine departure was adopting Scrypt from Tenebrix instead of SHA-256, on the theory that a memory-hard function would keep mining on general-purpose hardware.

The turning point

Litecoin's defining moment was not its own. In 2014 the Dogecoin developers, facing a falling hashrate, adopted merged mining so that Litecoin miners could secure Dogecoin at the same time — a change Charlie Lee publicly supported. Dogecoin's security has been coupled to Litecoin's hashrate ever since.

The second turning point was SegWit, which Litecoin activated in 2017 before Bitcoin did, confirming the network's real role: the place where Bitcoin's contested upgrades get their first production run.

A detail most summaries leave out

Scrypt's ASIC resistance did not survive contact with demand. Dedicated Scrypt miners shipped from 2014 onward and Litecoin mining was hardware-dominated within a few years — the same outcome Monero responded to by forking its algorithm repeatedly, and that Litecoin simply accepted.

The question that is still open

Litecoin's open question is differentiation. With SegWit, Lightning support and a later MimbleWimble extension block for optional privacy, its feature set is closer to a Bitcoin testbed than to a distinct product. That is a real role — cheap, fast, battle-tested — but it depends on Bitcoin continuing to produce features worth testing.

What this means when you swap LTC

Blocks target 2.5 minutes, so confirmations arrive about four times faster than Bitcoin's, which is why many services ask for more of them before crediting a deposit; the wall-clock wait ends up similar. Fees are typically a small fraction of Bitcoin's because block space is rarely contested.

Addresses are the classic trap. Litecoin uses `L…`, `M…` (P2SH) and `ltc1…` Bech32 formats, and the historical overlap between Litecoin's and Bitcoin's P2SH prefixes has caused genuine confusion — check the leading characters against the network you selected. Litecoin has no memo field.

Fees and pricing

Monivo does not add a separate platform fee. The quoted receive amount reflects the executing provider's pricing and applicable payout costs. Your sending wallet or exchange may charge its own network or withdrawal fee. The amount shown is an estimate; fixed and floating quotes follow the provider's terms.

LTC swap FAQ

How do I swap Litecoin (LTC) instantly on Monivo?

Pick LTC as the asset you want to receive, choose what you're paying with, paste your wallet address, and confirm. Monivo routes your order to the provider offering the best rate, and most swaps complete in under 10 minutes — no account needed.

Can I swap LTC with no KYC?

Yes. Crypto-to-crypto swaps of LTC on Monivo require no identity verification and no sign-up. Only fiat purchases (card or bank transfer) require KYC, because banks and payment processors mandate it.

Is swapping Litecoin on Monivo non-custodial?

Yes. Monivo never holds your funds. LTC is sent directly to the wallet address you provide, so you stay in control the whole time.

Which network does LTC use here?

Monivo supports Litecoin on the LTC network. Always double-check that your receiving wallet supports this network before confirming.

What fees apply when I swap LTC?

Monivo adds zero fees on top. The quote you see already reflects the strongest quote we found across connected providers, including their network and processing costs — all fees are included in the shown amount.

Why does a Litecoin deposit need more confirmations than a Bitcoin one?

Because each confirmation is worth less. Litecoin blocks arrive roughly every 2.5 minutes instead of every ten, so services ask for about four times as many blocks to reach comparable settlement assurance. The actual waiting time is similar.

Are Litecoin's MimbleWimble transactions private by default?

No. The MimbleWimble extension block is opt-in: funds have to be moved into it deliberately, and most wallets and exchanges handle ordinary transparent transactions. Do not assume a Litecoin transfer is confidential unless you have explicitly used that feature.
