Uniswap (UNI): questions and answers

The question that decides how you read Uniswap
Uniswap's origin story is a laid-off engineer learning Solidity. The part that matters for the token is that UNI exists because a competitor tried to steal the protocol's liquidity.
Order-book exchanges are a poor fit for a blockchain: every quote, cancellation and match costs gas, and market makers will not pay to stand still. The alternative — an on-chain pool that quotes prices from a formula — had been floated publicly before Uniswap existed. What was missing was a working implementation with liquidity in it.
What is still unsettled
The fee switch is the standing argument. Governance has had the authority to turn on a protocol fee since v2 and left it off for years, because a fee taken for token holders is a fee taken from the liquidity providers who make the exchange work at all. How to capture value for UNI without degrading the product is a question that has been reopened repeatedly rather than settled.
What this means when you swap UNI
UNI is an ERC-20 on Ethereum mainnet, with bridged versions on the networks Uniswap deploys to. As with every ERC-20, the danger is the network rather than the address: the same address can exist on several chains, and a transfer confirmed on the wrong one is generally unrecoverable.
You need ETH in the same wallet to move UNI. Timing follows Ethereum — twelve-second slots with finality after roughly fifteen minutes, and fees that rise with network demand.
Common UNI questions
- How do I swap Uniswap (UNI) instantly on Monivo?
- Pick UNI as the asset you want to receive, choose what you're paying with, paste your wallet address, and confirm. Monivo routes your order to the provider offering the best rate, and most swaps complete in under 10 minutes — no account needed.
- Can I swap UNI with no KYC?
- Yes. Crypto-to-crypto swaps of UNI on Monivo require no identity verification and no sign-up. Only fiat purchases (card or bank transfer) require KYC, because banks and payment processors mandate it.
- Is swapping Uniswap on Monivo non-custodial?
- Yes. Monivo never holds your funds. UNI is sent directly to the wallet address you provide, so you stay in control the whole time.
- Which network does UNI use here?
- Monivo supports Uniswap on the ERC20 network. Always double-check that your receiving wallet supports this network before confirming.
- What fees apply when I swap UNI?
- Monivo adds zero fees on top. The quote you see already reflects the strongest quote we found across connected providers, including their network and processing costs — all fees are included in the shown amount.
- Does holding UNI give me a share of trading fees?
- Not automatically. Trading fees go to liquidity providers, and a protocol fee for token holders has to be enabled by governance — something it has approached cautiously because it takes income from the providers the exchange depends on. Treat any claim of automatic fee income as a claim to check, not a fact.
- Why did Uniswap give tokens away in 2020?
- A competitor forked the code and used token rewards to pull liquidity away. The airdrop — a minimum of 400 UNI to every prior user before a snapshot date — was the defensive response, and it set the pattern most later airdrops copied.
