The story behind Zcash

Zcash grew out of the Zerocash academic research led by Matthew Green and colleagues, and launched in October 2016 under a founding company led by Zooko Wilcox.

Its initial trusted setup ceremony — a carefully choreographed ritual to generate cryptographic parameters and then destroy the secret that could compromise them — became a landmark event in applied cryptography, precisely because getting it wrong would have quietly broken the whole system.

Later upgrades, Sapling, Halo 2 and the Orchard shielded pool, eliminated that trusted-setup requirement altogether and made shielded transactions practical even on an ordinary mobile phone.

Zcash shares the top of the privacy category with Monero, but its privacy is optional rather than mandatory, and that single difference has kept it listed on more regulated exchanges even as scrutiny of privacy-preserving assets in general has increased. The trade-off is real: optional privacy means most ZEC actually circulates transparently, which some argue undercuts the fungibility argument that privacy coins are supposed to deliver.
