The story behind Cardano

Charles Hoskinson left Ethereum early and took a contrarian position with him: ship less, prove more. Cardano launched in September 2017 with formal methods and peer-reviewed papers behind its consensus design, which won it admirers and mockery in equal measure — the chain had no smart contracts for its first four years. Shelley brought decentralised staking in 2020, Alonzo brought smart contracts in 2021, and the Chang and Plomin upgrades in 2024–2025 handed governance to ADA holders themselves under the Voltaire constitution.

What ADA is used for

ADA covers transaction fees and is delegated to stake pools, which is unusually easy here — your coins never leave your wallet and there is no lock-up. Beyond that it collateralises Cardano DeFi, funds community proposals through Project Catalyst, and now carries governance weight over the treasury. The eUTXO accounting model means a transaction's outcome is knowable before you sign it, which is a genuinely different safety property from account-based chains.

Cardano in the market today

Cardano is a perennial top-tier asset by market capitalisation with one of the most loyal holder bases in crypto, and one of the widest gaps between community conviction and on-chain activity. Its DeFi ecosystem is small next to Ethereum's or Solana's, and the counter-argument to Cardano has always been the same: the rigour is real, but so is the time it costs while faster-moving chains take the users.
