Avalanche (AVAX) is a Layer-1 designed around the idea that not everyone should share one chain. Its subnets — now called L1s — let an institution or a game launch its own network with its own rules, while AVAX pays fees, secures validators, and is burned with every transaction.

The story behind Avalanche

The consensus protocol arrived anonymously: in 2018 a pseudonymous group calling itself Team Rocket posted a paper describing a way to reach agreement by repeated random sampling rather than by every node hearing everything. Cornell professor Emin Gün Sirer's team turned it into Avalanche, which launched in September 2020. The Avalanche9000 upgrade in December 2024 tore out the biggest barrier to the original vision by slashing the cost of launching a sovereign chain.

What AVAX is used for

The C-Chain is EVM-compatible, so Ethereum apps deploy with almost no changes, and that is where most DeFi lives. The more distinctive use is the custom L1: tokenised funds, institutional settlement networks and games that need control over validator sets, gas tokens or compliance rules. Every transaction burns AVAX rather than paying it to validators, so activity permanently removes supply.

Avalanche in the market today

Avalanche is an established large-cap chain with real institutional pilots behind it, particularly in tokenised assets. Its challenge is that the subnet model splits attention: a chain that succeeds on its own L1 can generate value that never shows up as C-Chain activity, which makes the network harder to read from the outside than a single-chain competitor.
