Cosmos (ATOM) is the staking asset of the Cosmos Hub, the first chain in an ecosystem of independent, application-specific blockchains linked together by the Inter-Blockchain Communication protocol.

The story behind Cosmos

Jae Kwon and Ethan Buchman raised funding for Cosmos in 2017 with a wager that most blockchains would eventually want their own dedicated chain rather than sharing one crowded network. The hub launched in March 2019 running Tendermint consensus, packaged into the Cosmos SDK that dozens of later chains — Injective, Celestia, dYdX and Kava among them — were built with.

The missing piece arrived in 2021, when IBC went live and let these otherwise sovereign chains actually talk to each other.

What ATOM is used for

You would stake ATOM through delegated proof-of-stake to help secure the hub and earn rewards funded by ongoing inflation into the community pool. More distinctively, ATOM underpins interchain security arrangements, where the hub's own validators lend their security to protect smaller, newer chains in the ecosystem in exchange for a cut of those chains' fees.

Cosmos's technology has spread far wider than ATOM's own market value suggests, because most chains built with the SDK issue their own native token rather than relying on ATOM, leaving the hub as just one participant in an ecosystem it helped create. That is the honest tension at the centre of the project: enormous technical influence, but a token whose value capture from that influence is indirect at best.
