About Polkadot (DOT)

Interoperability token

Polkadot (DOT) is a network of interoperable blockchains: a central relay chain provides shared security while connected parachains run their own independent logic. DOT is staked to secure that relay chain, used for governance votes, and spent to buy the block space parachains need.

The story behind Polkadot

Gavin Wood helped write Ethereum's original code before concluding, in a 2016 paper, that one chain trying to do everything was the wrong design — better to let many specialised chains share security through a common relay layer. Polkadot's relay chain launched in May 2020, and the first parachain slot auctions followed in late 2021, with projects locking up DOT for months at a time to win a place.

That rigid auction model eventually gave way to more flexible 'coretime' purchases, and governance moved fully on-chain under OpenGov, retiring the council-based system Polkadot started with.

What DOT is used for

You would stake DOT through nominated proof-of-stake to help secure the relay chain and earn a share of network rewards for it, and you can vote directly on treasury spending and protocol changes through OpenGov rather than delegating that judgment to a council. Coretime purchases, paid in DOT, are what let a parachain actually access the network's shared security and cross-chain messaging.

Polkadot in the market today

Polkadot remains one of the best-known interoperability projects and controls a substantial on-chain treasury to fund its own ecosystem. It competes for the same cross-chain role as Cosmos, LayerZero and the fast-growing web of Ethereum rollups, and that crowded field has diluted the first-mover advantage Polkadot held when parachain auctions first launched.
