About Polygon (prev. MATIC) (POL)
Ethereum scalingPOL is the token of Polygon, the network that scaled Ethereum before rollups were the default answer. It replaced MATIC in a 1:1 migration and is designed to secure many Polygon chains at once rather than a single network.
The story behind Polygon (prev. MATIC)
Four engineers in India — Jaynti Kanani, Sandeep Nailwal, Anurag Arjun and Mihailo Bjelic — launched Matic Network in 2019 as a plasma sidechain, at a moment when Ethereum fees were pricing ordinary users out. It worked: Polygon PoS became the cheap chain that big consumer brands actually shipped on.
The 2021 rebrand to Polygon brought a bundle of scaling bets, and in 2024 the network began migrating MATIC to POL, a token designed to be staked once and reused to secure the whole Polygon family through AggLayer.
What POL is used for
POL pays gas on Polygon PoS and is staked by validators, with the newer design letting a single stake secure multiple chains and earn from each. Polygon carries a large share of crypto's enterprise and consumer deployments — loyalty programmes, ticketing, payments, gaming — precisely because transactions cost almost nothing and the tooling is identical to Ethereum's.
Polygon (prev. MATIC) in the market today
Polygon remains one of the most-used networks in crypto by transaction count and one of the most commercially embedded. Its strategic risk is that Ethereum's own rollup roadmap has commoditised cheap block space, so Polygon now competes with dozens of L2s for the same activity, and AggLayer is its answer to that crowding.
