Cronos (CRO) is the token of the Crypto.com exchange ecosystem and the gas asset of Cronos Chain, an EVM-compatible network built with the Cosmos SDK to give Crypto.com its own home for on-chain activity.

The story behind Cronos

Issued in 2018 as Crypto.com Coin, CRO originally backed the exchange's cards and rewards programme long before Cronos, the separate EVM chain, launched in November 2021. A controversial 2021 burn of 70 billion tokens was meant to settle the supply question permanently, but a 2025 governance vote partially reversed it by reissuing a portion of those tokens — reigniting exactly the debate over supply policy the original burn had tried to close.

What CRO is used for

CRO pays gas fees on Cronos, is staked for higher tiers of Crypto.com's card programme and reduced trading fee discounts, and secures the Cronos chain's validator set through delegated staking. Its value is tied less to independent on-chain innovation than to how actively people use the exchange and its associated products.
