The story behind Optimism

Optimism launched its rollup in 2021 and, in mid-2022, gave OP away to early users rather than selling it. Its stranger idea proved more consequential: retroactive public goods funding, which pays builders after their work turns out to matter — tens of millions of dollars sent to open-source developers who never pitched anyone for it.

Then Coinbase chose the OP Stack to build Base, and Optimism's codebase stopped being one chain's software and became infrastructure for a large slice of Ethereum's Layer-2 landscape.

What OP is used for

OP votes inside the two-house Optimism Collective — a token house and a citizens' house — directing public-goods funding rounds and the Superchain standards member chains agree to, including the share of sequencer revenue they contribute back. Gas on OP Mainnet itself is paid in ETH.
