About Bittensor (TAO)
Decentralised AIBittensor (TAO) is a network that pays for machine intelligence. Independent subnets compete at tasks — text generation, prediction, storage, scraping — and miners are rewarded according to how useful other participants judge their output to be.
The story behind Bittensor
Founded by Jacob Steeves and Ala Shaabana, Bittensor set out to build a market for intelligence rather than a company that owns it. Its economics are deliberately Bitcoin-shaped: 21 million TAO, halvings, no premine, no venture allocation at genesis. The 2023 arrival of dynamic subnets turned the network from a single model market into an open platform where anyone can define a task and let miners compete at it.
What TAO is used for
Miners contribute models or services to a subnet; validators score them; TAO flows to whoever the scoring says is contributing value. Holders stake to validators to earn a share. Applications sit on top, buying inference from the network. It is a genuinely unusual design — a token whose issuance is an ongoing procurement budget for AI work.
Bittensor in the market today
Bittensor is the flagship of the decentralised-AI sector and one of the few crypto assets with a coherent story about paying for real computation. The critique is measurement: scoring intelligence is subjective, subnet quality varies enormously, and the network's output must eventually be bought by people outside the token economy for the model to close.
