The story behind Aave

Stani Kulechov built ETHLend in 2017 as a peer-to-peer lending marketplace, and it barely worked — matching one lender to one borrower was too slow for real markets. In 2020 he rebuilt it from scratch as Aave, Finnish for 'ghost', and pooled liquidity so anyone could borrow instantly against a shared pot rather than waiting for a match.

That version also introduced flash loans, a strange but genuinely new financial primitive: borrow any amount with zero collateral, as long as you repay within the same transaction, a tool later used for arbitrage, collateral swaps and, occasionally, exploits of other protocols.

V3 spread the protocol across multiple chains in 2022 with tighter risk isolation between markets, and Aave later launched its own stablecoin, GHO, minted directly against user collateral, turning the protocol into a fuller financial stack rather than just a lending book.

What AAVE is used for

You hold AAVE to vote on which assets the protocol lists, how much risk each market can carry, and where treasury funds go — decisions that directly shape how much a bad listing could cost the whole system.

Stake it in the Safety Module and you are underwriting the protocol itself — a backstop that gets slashed if a market ever runs a shortfall, in exchange for a share of fees, effectively acting as the insurance layer sitting behind every depositor. None of this is required to actually use Aave: you can deposit, borrow and repay without ever touching the governance token, since the lending markets themselves are open to anyone with a wallet.

Aave in the market today

Aave holds the largest share of on-chain lending deposits across Ethereum and its rollups, and it has survived several market crashes without a protocol-level insolvency, which is a rarer claim in DeFi than it should be.

That track record is now being tested from a different angle: Morpho's leaner, modular lending markets let curators design bespoke risk products that pooled protocols like Aave cannot easily match, and some of the capital that once had nowhere else to go now does.

Aave's scale and battle-tested audits remain real advantages, but as competitors iterate faster on architecture, holding the largest market share today is no guarantee of holding it indefinitely.
