The story behind Curve DAO Token

Michael Egorov, a physicist with a background in distributed systems, launched Curve in January 2020 with an invariant curve — a mathematical formula — tuned specifically for assets that rarely diverge much in price, letting it offer far tighter pricing on those swaps than general-purpose exchanges.

CRV's vote-escrow locking mechanism, where holders lock tokens for a period to gain voting power, spawned what the industry nicknamed the 'Curve wars', as rival protocols fought to accumulate influence over which pools received emissions. Curve later launched its own crvUSD stablecoin and survived a serious exploit in 2023 that drained several pools before white-hat efforts and negotiations recovered much of the loss.

What CRV is used for

Locking CRV as veCRV lets you vote on which liquidity pools receive the protocol's emissions, a decision that other protocols actively compete to influence because it determines where trading volume and fees concentrate. In return, veCRV holders earn a share of trading fees and often side payments, or bribes, from parties trying to win their vote.

If you simply supply liquidity to Curve's pools, you earn CRV rewards layered on top of the ordinary swap fees those pools generate.

Curve remains a primary venue for large stablecoin swaps, and its vote-escrow governance design has been copied across DeFi more widely than almost any other tokenomic model of the past several years.

Its 2023 exploit is a reminder that even mature, heavily audited protocols carry real smart-contract risk, and CRV's price has historically been sensitive to large holders' borrowing positions against their token stack, which can create forced-selling pressure during market stress.
