The story behind Flow

Dapper Labs learned the hard way what happens when a niche hit overwhelms a general-purpose chain: its CryptoKitties game clogged Ethereum so badly in 2017 that it became a cautionary tale about scalability. Rather than wait for Ethereum to fix that, Dapper built its own chain, launching Flow in 2020.

NBA Top Shot then turned it, briefly, into one of the most active networks in all of crypto, proving the underlying bet that mainstream sports fans would transact on a blockchain if the friction was low enough. Flow later added EVM compatibility so Solidity contracts could deploy on it with little modification.
