The story behind Hyperliquid

Hyperliquid launched its perpetuals exchange in 2023 with an unusual proposition: an order book fast enough to compete with centralised exchanges, but running entirely on-chain rather than off it.

In November 2024 the project distributed HYPE in an airdrop that ranked among the largest ever by value, and pointedly reserved no allocation for venture capital investors — a deliberate rejection of the insider-heavy token distributions common elsewhere in the industry. In 2025 the team opened HyperEVM, a general smart-contract layer, extending the chain beyond trading into a broader application platform.

On HyperEVM you pay gas in HYPE for any smart-contract activity, and you can stake it to validators who help secure the network. What sets HYPE apart is its buyback mechanism: a share of the exchange's trading fee revenue is used to repurchase and burn tokens continuously, so heavy usage of the underlying exchange directly reduces HYPE's circulating supply rather than just generating fees for someone else.

Hyperliquid captures a dominant share of decentralised perpetual futures trading volume, and HYPE has become one of the largest assets ever launched without a venture allocation, a fact its holders treat as a genuine point of pride.

Its exposure is concentrated, though: the token's value depends heavily on continued dominance of one specific niche, perpetual futures, and any serious competitor eating into that volume would hit the buyback mechanism directly.
