iFinex issued LEO in a private sale in May 2019 under real financial pressure: it needed to cover an $850 million shortfall tied to funds frozen at the payment processor Crypto Capital. Rather than absorb the loss quietly, the company sold LEO to raise the money and committed publicly to burning tokens from its ongoing revenue as compensation to holders.

Some of the frozen funds were later recovered, and proceeds from an earlier Bitfinex hack were also directed toward the token, triggering additional large one-off burns beyond the routine ones.
