The story behind Chainlink

Sergey Nazarov and Steve Ellis identified a problem most of the industry underestimated in 2017: a smart contract that cannot verify outside information — a stock price, a sports result, a flight delay — can only ever automate things that happen entirely on-chain, which is a small fraction of what finance actually needs. Their whitepaper became Chainlink, launched on Ethereum mainnet in 2019.

Since then the network has expanded well beyond price feeds, adding a Verifiable Random Function for provably fair randomness, automation tooling that triggers contract functions on schedule, proof-of-reserve feeds that verify off-chain collateral, and the Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol, which participants connected to the Swift banking network have piloted for tokenised settlement.

What LINK is used for

If you run a Chainlink node, you get paid in LINK for delivering data that smart contracts request, and you stake LINK as a bond that can be slashed if you report something false. As a user of DeFi, you likely depend on Chainlink without realising it: the large majority of major lending and derivatives protocols rely on its price feeds to know, safely and continuously, what assets are actually worth before liquidating or settling a position.

Chainlink in the market today

Chainlink secures the majority of oracle-dependent value locked across DeFi and stands out as one of the few crypto projects with active enterprise and banking pilots rather than just retail trading activity. Its position is not unchallenged, though — Pyth Network and other newer oracle designs are competing directly for the same customers by promising lower latency, and how much of that business Chainlink retains is an open question.
