Lighter launched during the 2024–2025 surge in on-chain perpetual futures trading, a period when volumes on decentralised derivatives exchanges grew fast enough to attract serious scrutiny of how those exchanges actually match and settle trades.

Its founders built around a specific complaint that applies equally to centralised exchanges and to off-chain sequencer-based rivals: users cannot independently verify that their order was matched fairly, only that a result was reported to them. Lighter's answer was to make the matching engine itself provable with zero-knowledge cryptography.
