The story behind Morpho

Morpho began in 2022 as a quiet optimisation layer sitting on top of Aave and Compound, squeezing better rates out of existing pools without changing their design or asking users to move their funds anywhere new.

In 2024 it discarded that layer entirely and rebuilt as Morpho Blue — a stripped-down base protocol with almost nothing hardcoded, where anyone can permissionlessly create an isolated market with its own collateral, oracle and interest curve, shifting risk decisions away from a single central governance vote and onto whoever actually creates or curates each market.

The token became transferable that same year, and fintechs including Coinbase have since built consumer lending products, like BTC-backed loans, directly on top of Morpho's markets, using it as backend infrastructure most of their own users never see.

The lending markets themselves need no token at all to use — you deposit, borrow, or become a vault curator who designs a risk product for others to deposit into, which is a genuinely different job from anything Aave's pooled model asks of anyone, closer to running a small, transparent fund than simply listing an asset on a shared platform.

Morpho has grown into one of the largest lending protocols by deposits and is now the clearest architectural challenger to Aave's pooled design.

The trade-off is real: isolated markets contain risk to a single pool if something breaks, but they also push more of the underwriting judgement onto individual vault curators, and how well any given curator does that job is something you have to check yourself rather than assume the protocol has already vetted for you. That extra diligence is the price of the flexibility Morpho offers, and it will not suit every depositor equally.
