The story behind Nano

Colin LeMahieu started work in 2014 as RaiBlocks, frustrated by Bitcoin's fees and confirmation times, and solved the problem by refusing the shared-ledger assumption. In a block-lattice, sender and receiver each write to their own chain, so there is nothing to compete over and nothing to pay for.

The distribution was equally unusual: every coin was given away through a captcha faucet that closed in 2017, so there was no ICO, no premine and no founder allocation. The rename to Nano came in 2018, followed by a spam-flood stress test in 2021 that forced a rewrite of transaction prioritisation.

Nano does one thing: it moves value instantly and free. That makes it viable for micropayments, tipping, point-of-sale and remittances where any fee at all would break the use case, and it is a favourite among people who want a cryptocurrency they can hand to a non-technical friend without explaining gas. There are no smart contracts and no DeFi; the project has never pretended to want them.

Nano is a small-cap asset with a devoted following and limited exchange depth, which is the price of never having sold tokens to fund marketing. Feeless design also means no fee revenue to pay for security, so the network depends on voluntary representatives — an elegant model whose long-term incentives remain the standing criticism.
