The story behind NEAR Protocol

Illia Polosukhin co-authored the original transformer paper that later underpinned modern AI language models before turning to blockchain infrastructure with Alexander Skidanov, and together they launched NEAR's mainnet in 2020. Sharding arrived in 2021 through a design called Nightshade, splitting the network's workload across parallel chains rather than forcing every validator to process every transaction.

From 2024 the project made a deliberate pivot, repositioning itself around AI agents and chain abstraction — a bet that autonomous software, not only human users, would soon be the network's biggest source of demand.

What NEAR is used for

NEAR pays for every transaction and is staked by the validators who secure the network, with a portion of collected fees burned to offset ongoing inflation.
