UC Berkeley professor Dawn Song founded Oasis and launched its mainnet in November 2020, focused from day one on data privacy and on what the project calls 'tokenised data' — the idea that sensitive information itself, not just money, deserves a place on-chain.

Its Sapphire runtime, released in 2023, made Oasis the first confidential EVM that developers could deploy ordinary, unmodified Solidity contracts to, without having to learn a new programming model just to get privacy.
