The story behind Stellar

Jed McCaleb co-founded Ripple, fell out with it, and in 2014 launched Stellar with lawyer Joyce Kim to pursue the same rails with a non-profit, financial-inclusion framing. The Stellar Development Foundation rewrote consensus in 2015 as the Stellar Consensus Protocol, and in 2019 burned more than half the total supply — 55 billion XLM — capping it permanently.

Soroban brought smart contracts to the network in 2024, ending Stellar's long stretch as a payments chain with no programmability.

What XLM is used for

Stellar's speciality is the anchor: a licensed local institution issues a token backed by its own currency, and the network handles conversion and settlement between them. That makes it a favourite for remittance corridors, aid disbursement and stablecoin issuance — MoneyGram cash-in and cash-out, USDC on Stellar, and central-bank pilots. XLM itself pays the tiny fees and provides the bridging liquidity between currency pairs.

Stellar in the market today

Stellar is a long-standing top-tier asset with real institutional partnerships and unusually low fee revenue by design. It competes most directly with Ripple's XRP for the same corridors, and increasingly with stablecoins running on general-purpose chains, which can do the same job wherever liquidity is deeper.
