The story behind Aerodrome Finance

The team behind Velodrome on Optimism launched Aerodrome in August 2023, and it quickly became Base's largest decentralised exchange by liquidity, benefiting directly from Coinbase's push to grow activity on its own rollup. It runs on the ve(3,3) model, which pays voters the trading fees and bribes attached to the pools they support, rather than spreading rewards evenly across every pool regardless of where the demand actually is, so liquidity tends to concentrate wherever voters, often projects themselves, are willing to pay the most to attract it.

What AERO is used for

You lock AERO as veAERO to vote on where weekly emissions go, earning the fees and bribes tied to your chosen pools. Projects building on Base use those votes as a way to bootstrap liquidity for their own tokens by attracting veAERO voters to their side, effectively renting liquidity through bribes rather than paying for it directly out of their own treasury.
