About IOTA (IOTA)
Layer-1 blockchainIOTA is a feeless distributed ledger built for machine-to-machine payments and data integrity in the internet of things, historically running on a directed acyclic graph called the Tangle rather than a conventional blockchain.
The story behind IOTA
Founded in 2015 and launched in 2017, IOTA spent years relying on a central 'coordinator' node for security — an admission that the fully decentralised vision was not yet achievable, and a point of ongoing criticism from the wider industry. The 2023 Stardust and 2024 Rebased upgrades finally removed that coordinator, moving the network to delegated proof-of-stake with smart contracts built in. Along the way, IOTA ran trade and mobility pilots with the European Union and in the United Arab Emirates, aimed at exactly the kind of sensor and logistics data its architecture was designed to handle.
What IOTA is used for
IOTA moves value and data with no transaction fee, which matters most in sensor networks, supply-chain records and digital identity systems where a micropayment would otherwise cost more than the transaction itself is worth. Programmable smart contracts, added in the recent upgrades, now support more complex applications beyond pure data transfer.
IOTA in the market today
IOTA is a mid-to-small-cap project with a genuinely distinctive industrial focus on machine-to-machine payments, but its long history of ambitious re-engineering has at times slowed ecosystem growth relative to chains that prioritised stability over redesign. Removing the coordinator was necessary; whether it arrives too late to matter is the open question.
