The story behind Mantle

Mantle emerged in 2023 from the merger of BitDAO, which held a multi-billion-dollar treasury seeded by the Bybit exchange, with a new rollup project — an unusual origin story that gave a brand-new Layer-2 an enormous balance sheet from day one rather than having to build one up through fees over years. The old BIT token converted into MNT as part of that merger. Mantle's modular design initially used EigenDA, a separate data-availability network, to keep transaction costs down rather than relying entirely on Ethereum for that function.
