The story behind NEO

Da Hongfei and Erik Zhang founded the project in China as AntShares in 2014, years before most of the industry took Asian blockchain projects seriously, and the 2017 rebrand to NEO came with a nickname the press attached quickly and rarely dropped: 'China's Ethereum'. That comparison brought attention but also expectations the project spent years trying to live up to. The N3 rewrite, launched in 2021, added built-in oracles, decentralised storage and a naming service directly into the protocol rather than leaving them to third-party add-ons.
