About Ravencoin (RVN)
Layer-1 blockchainRavencoin (RVN) is a Bitcoin-derived proof-of-work chain built for one narrow job: issuing and moving assets like securities, in-game items and collectibles, rather than running general smart contracts. It launched with no premine, no ICO and no founder allocation, and RVN pays the small burn fee charged whenever a new asset is created.
The story behind Ravencoin
Ravencoin went live on 3 January 2018, chosen deliberately as Bitcoin's ninth birthday, a signal about the project's lineage and intent. There was no pre-sale and no team stash of coins waiting to be dumped — everything was mined from block one. Overstock's Medici Ventures backed the project early, drawn to its potential as rails for tokenising real-world securities long before that idea became fashionable elsewhere. In 2020 the team switched mining algorithms to KAWPOW specifically to keep the network open to GPU miners, resisting the specialised ASIC hardware that had come to dominate Bitcoin mining and, in doing so, concentrated who could participate.
What RVN is used for
You would reach for Ravencoin if you wanted to issue a token representing a real asset — a share, a coupon, a unique collectible — without building a whole blockchain to do it. Creating an asset burns a small amount of RVN, the network's messaging layer lets issuers notify holders directly, and dividend-style payouts can be distributed automatically to everyone holding a given asset. Mining stays accessible to ordinary GPU owners rather than requiring specialised rigs, which keeps the security budget more widely distributed than on many proof-of-work chains.
Ravencoin in the market today
Ravencoin remains a small-cap coin with a loyal GPU-mining community and a fair-launch story that is rare in a market full of pre-mined and VC-funded tokens. Its asset-issuance layer never captured anywhere near the volume that flowed to Ethereum-based token standards, and today it occupies a niche rather than a mainstream role. Anyone drawn to it for the tokenisation thesis should recognise that thesis has largely played out elsewhere.
