About Stacks (STX)
Bitcoin layerStacks (STX) brings smart contracts to Bitcoin by anchoring its own blocks to the Bitcoin chain, letting developers build applications that ultimately settle on Bitcoin's base layer without altering Bitcoin itself. STX pays transaction fees and can be locked, or 'stacked', to help secure the network in exchange for rewards paid in BTC.
The story behind Stacks
Bitcoin's scripting language was deliberately kept simple, which ruled out the kind of programmability Ethereum offered — a limitation the team behind Blockstack set out to work around rather than fight. In 2019 they ran the first token offering formally qualified by the US Securities and Exchange Commission, an unusually cautious path in an industry that mostly ignored regulators at the time, and rebranded to Stacks in 2020. The real turning point came with the Nakamoto upgrade in 2024, which cut block times to seconds and introduced sBTC, a Bitcoin-backed asset controlled by a decentralised group of signers rather than one custodian — a meaningful step toward Bitcoin DeFi that does not simply ask users to trust a company.
What STX is used for
STX covers the fees for every transaction on the network, and you can stack it — lock it up for a period — to help secure the chain, earning your reward in BTC rather than more STX, an unusual design that ties the token's yield directly to Bitcoin itself. Developers write contracts in Clarity, a language built specifically for this chain, and use it to run lending markets, decentralised exchanges and NFT marketplaces whose final state settles back to Bitcoin's own ledger.
Stacks in the market today
Stacks is the largest Bitcoin smart-contract layer by ecosystem size, and its fortunes move closely with broader interest in Bitcoin DeFi. That is both its advantage and its exposure: when enthusiasm for Bitcoin-native applications rises, Stacks tends to benefit, but newer Bitcoin layers and sidechains are chasing the same opportunity, and Stacks no longer has the field to itself.

Zero added fees: Monivo does not add a platform fee, a minimum or a withdrawal charge — the rate you see is the rate you get. Blockchain network fees are shown in full before you confirm, and the final amount you receive is quoted up front.
Monivo does not add a separate fee or markup to the provider quote. Monivo may earn a commission from the liquidity provider when a completed swap is referred through our platform. Provider spreads and applicable network costs are reflected in the quoted amount.
Network fees are set by the blockchain, not by Monivo. No account, no subscription and no withdrawal charge. Live support is available 24/7.
