About Curve DAO Token (CRV)

DeFi token

Curve DAO Token (CRV) governs Curve Finance, a decentralised exchange specialised in swapping assets that should trade near parity with each other, such as stablecoins and other pegged tokens, with unusually low slippage.

The story behind Curve DAO Token

Michael Egorov, a physicist with a background in distributed systems, launched Curve in January 2020 with an invariant curve — a mathematical formula — tuned specifically for assets that rarely diverge much in price, letting it offer far tighter pricing on those swaps than general-purpose exchanges.

CRV's vote-escrow locking mechanism, where holders lock tokens for a period to gain voting power, spawned what the industry nicknamed the 'Curve wars', as rival protocols fought to accumulate influence over which pools received emissions. Curve later launched its own crvUSD stablecoin and survived a serious exploit in 2023 that drained several pools before white-hat efforts and negotiations recovered much of the loss.

What CRV is used for

Locking CRV as veCRV lets you vote on which liquidity pools receive the protocol's emissions, a decision that other protocols actively compete to influence because it determines where trading volume and fees concentrate. In return, veCRV holders earn a share of trading fees and often side payments, or bribes, from parties trying to win their vote.

If you simply supply liquidity to Curve's pools, you earn CRV rewards layered on top of the ordinary swap fees those pools generate.

Curve DAO Token in the market today

Curve remains a primary venue for large stablecoin swaps, and its vote-escrow governance design has been copied across DeFi more widely than almost any other tokenomic model of the past several years.

Its 2023 exploit is a reminder that even mature, heavily audited protocols carry real smart-contract risk, and CRV's price has historically been sensitive to large holders' borrowing positions against their token stack, which can create forced-selling pressure during market stress.

How to buy or swap CRV

  1. Pick CRV as the asset you want to receive.
  2. Choose what you're paying with — crypto or a fiat card.
  3. Monivo compares every connected exchange and routes your order to the best available rate.
  4. Paste your wallet address and confirm — funds arrive in minutes.

The story of Curve DAO Token

Curve is a maths paper that turned into a political system. The question worth asking is what happens when a token's main use is deciding who gets paid.

Why Curve DAO Token exists at all

The StableSwap paper starts from a narrow complaint: a constant-product market maker like early Uniswap prices every trade along a curve that assumes the two assets can diverge arbitrarily. For two dollar stablecoins that is wasteful — most of the liquidity sits at prices that will never trade, and swaps near parity slip more than they should.

Curve's invariant blends a constant-sum curve (perfect near the peg) with a constant-product one (safe at the extremes), concentrating depth where trades actually happen.

The people behind it

Michael Egorov, a physicist by training who had previously co-founded NuCypher, wrote the paper in 2019 and framed the protocol not only as a better venue for swaps but as a way for liquidity providers to earn from arbitrage flow.

The original bet

The technical bet was specialisation: give up generality and win the specific market of like-valued assets. The economic bet was vote-escrow. Locking CRV for up to four years produces non-transferable veCRV whose weight decays over time, and veCRV holders vote weekly on which pools receive CRV emissions.

That design tied the token to a recurring, concrete decision rather than to occasional protocol votes.

The turning point

It worked exactly as designed, and the consequences surprised everyone. Because emissions determine where liquidity goes, projects began accumulating veCRV — and then buying the votes of those who had it. Convex aggregated a large share of locked CRV, and bribe marketplaces made vote-buying a routine, priced activity. The 'Curve wars' became the canonical case study in governance-token economics.

Then came July 2023: a broken reentrancy lock in specific Vyper compiler versions let attackers drain several pools, with losses across affected protocols reported near $70 million. Part of the funds was returned. Curve's DAO could not pause the pools — its only lever was killing emissions to them.

A detail most summaries leave out

The 2023 exploit was not in Curve's contracts at all; it was in particular versions of the language compiler they were written in. It is a reminder that a protocol audit covers the code as understood by the tooling beneath it, and that tooling can be wrong.

The question that is still open

Founder concentration is the open risk and it has been demonstrated, not hypothesised. Egorov's large CRV-collateralised borrowings were liquidated in June 2024 across several lending markets after a sharp price fall, leaving bad debt behind on at least one venue. The structural question — what happens when one holder's leverage is systemically relevant to a token's market — has not been answered by any governance change.

What this means when you swap CRV

CRV is an ERC-20 on Ethereum with bridged deployments on Arbitrum, Optimism, Polygon and other networks Curve supports. Network selection is the main hazard: the same ticker exists as different contracts on different chains.

Holding CRV is not the same as locking it. Vote-escrowed CRV requires a deliberate lock of up to four years, is non-transferable and cannot be unlocked early — do not lock tokens you may want to swap. Transfers follow Ethereum timing and need ETH for gas.

Fees and pricing

Monivo does not add a separate platform fee. The quoted receive amount reflects the executing provider's pricing and applicable payout costs. Your sending wallet or exchange may charge its own network or withdrawal fee. The amount shown is an estimate; fixed and floating quotes follow the provider's terms.

Monivo does not add a separate platform fee. Some partner quotes include a small affiliate margin that is retained by Monivo as a referral commission; this margin is included in the rate shown, not added on top. Provider spreads and applicable network costs are also reflected in the quoted amount.

Network fees are set by the blockchain, not by Monivo. No account, no subscription and no withdrawal charge. Live support is available 24/7.

CRV swap FAQ

How do I swap Curve DAO Token (CRV) instantly on Monivo?

Pick CRV as the asset you want to receive, choose what you're paying with, paste your wallet address, and confirm. Monivo routes your order to the provider offering the best rate, and most swaps complete in under 10 minutes — no account needed.

Can I swap CRV with no KYC?

Yes. Crypto-to-crypto swaps of CRV on Monivo require no identity verification and no sign-up. Only fiat purchases (card or bank transfer) require KYC, because banks and payment processors mandate it.

Is swapping Curve DAO Token on Monivo non-custodial?

Yes. Monivo never holds your funds. CRV is sent directly to the wallet address you provide, so you stay in control the whole time.

Which network does CRV use here?

Monivo supports Curve DAO Token on the ERC20 network. Always double-check that your receiving wallet supports this network before confirming.

What fees apply when I swap CRV?

Monivo adds zero fees on top. The quote you see already reflects the strongest quote we found across connected providers, including their network and processing costs — all fees are included in the shown amount.

What is veCRV and can I swap it?

veCRV is what you receive when you lock CRV for a fixed period of up to four years; it carries voting weight that decays as the lock runs down. It is non-transferable and cannot be sold or unlocked early, so only lock tokens you are certain you will not need.

Was Curve itself hacked in 2023?

The exploit came from a reentrancy bug in specific versions of the Vyper compiler used to write some pools, not from a flaw in the pool logic as written. Several pools were drained, a portion of the funds was later returned, and Curve's DAO could only respond by cutting emissions to the affected pools.
