Ethereum Classic (ETC) is the continuation of the original Ethereum chain, keeping proof-of-work mining and holding to the principle that a public ledger should never be rewritten, even to undo a theft.

The story behind Ethereum Classic

When the 2016 DAO hack drained roughly $60 million worth of ether from an experimental fund, Ethereum's community voted to hard-fork the chain and reverse the theft. A minority refused, arguing that 'code is law' and that reversing a transaction — however sympathetic the circumstances — set a precedent no immutable ledger should tolerate. That unforked chain became Ethereum Classic. It has survived several 51% attacks since, and picked up additional mining hash rate after Ethereum's own 2022 move to proof-of-stake left a wave of GPU miners suddenly looking for a new chain to secure.

What ETC is used for
