The story behind Internet Computer

Dominic Williams and the DFINITY Foundation spent five years in relative quiet before the Internet Computer launched in May 2021, and what followed was one of the steepest price collapses crypto has seen, a brutal correction from expectations set unusually high even by the sector's standards.

The team kept building anyway, adding chain-key cryptography that lets the network read and write directly to Bitcoin and Ethereum without a conventional bridge — a technical answer to the credibility problem the launch had created.

What ICP is used for

The idea is that you could run software — a social app, an AI inference service, a full website — without ever renting a server from a cloud provider. ICP is burned as 'cycles' to pay for that computation and storage, and it is staked in structures called neurons to vote in the Network Nervous System that governs upgrades to the protocol. Its containers, known as canisters, are where those applications actually live and execute.

Internet Computer remains a mid-cap network with an unusually wide technical remit spanning hosting, compute and cross-chain messaging, still trading far below the levels its 2021 launch implied. It competes loosely with both traditional cloud providers, who have vastly more scale and reliability history, and other decentralised compute networks chasing the same idea from different technical angles.

Why Internet Computer exists at all

The founding claim was that blockchains had settled for too little. If code can run trustlessly, then not just the ledger but the web application on top of it — its storage, its backend, its served pages — should run on the network rather than on a cloud provider.

Delivering that requires a very different machine: subnets of nodes running application canisters, replicated and orchestrated, with enough performance to serve ordinary web requests.

The people behind it

The Dfinity Foundation, founded by Dominic Williams, spent several years and a reported nine-figure raise on research before launch, with cryptographers including Jan Camenisch working on the key aggregation scheme that defines the design.

The network is governed by the Network Nervous System, an on-chain system where staked ICP votes on upgrades and node membership — an unusually literal form of protocol governance.

The original bet

The technical bet is chain-key cryptography. Subnets produce signatures verifiable against a single, unchanging network public key, so a browser can check that a response came from the network without syncing anything. That is what makes serving a web application from the chain plausible.

The cost is that the whole system's integrity concentrates in that key scheme and in the governance body that controls subnet composition, which is why criticism of ICP is almost always governance criticism rather than cryptography criticism.

The turning point

ICP listed on 10 May 2021 at a very high valuation, then fell more than ninety per cent within weeks — a collapse severe enough to attract mainstream financial coverage. The price is not the interesting part; the dispute about its cause is.

An independent on-chain analysis published that June attributed a large share of exchange deposits in the period to addresses it associated with the foundation and early participants. The attribution is contested and has not been established in a proceeding, and Monivo reports it as an allegation rather than a finding.

A detail most summaries leave out

The identity model has two distinct concepts that look like one. A principal identifies a caller; an account identifier is a hash of a principal plus a subaccount and is what the ICP ledger uses for transfers. Both are strings, both look canonical, and the ledger accepts only the right one for its purpose.

The question that is still open

Litigation and governance criticism both remain live. One securities class action was resolved in Dfinity's favour on standing grounds, affirmed on appeal in January 2026; other civil claims have been filed and allege far more, none of which has been adjudicated. Separately, how much voting power the foundation and early participants hold in the governance system is still argued rather than settled.

What this means when you swap ICP

The practical hazard with ICP is the two-identifier problem. Exchanges generally expect an account identifier — a sixty-four character hexadecimal string — while wallets and applications often show a principal in dashed form. Sending to the wrong one can leave funds somewhere you cannot easily reach without the derivation step.

Beyond that, ICP behaves unlike most assets in one more way: staking is done by locking ICP into neurons with a chosen dissolve period, and those neurons cannot be sold or moved until they dissolve. That is a real lock-up, not a soft one, so read the terms before staking.
