About Lido DAO (LDO)
Liquid staking tokenLido (LDO) governs the protocol that broke staking's cruellest trade-off. Lock ETH to help secure Ethereum and you could not touch it; Lido hands back stETH instead — a receipt that keeps earning while you lend, spend or trade it.
The story behind Lido DAO
Lido launched in December 2020, days after Ethereum's staking contract opened with no withdrawals and no date for when that might change. Depositors were being asked to hand over money for an indefinite period on trust. A liquid receipt turned that leap into a decision people could reverse, and it worked so well that by 2022 a large share of all staked ETH ran through one protocol — which is how 'is Lido too big for Ethereum's own good?'
became one of the ecosystem's loudest arguments. The DAO has since wound down Solana and Polygon to concentrate entirely on Ethereum.
What LDO is used for
LDO is a vote rather than a yield: holders choose node operators, set the protocol's fee split and direct treasury spending. The staking rewards go to stETH holders, and stETH has itself become one of the most widely accepted forms of collateral in DeFi.
Lido DAO in the market today
Lido remains the largest liquid staking protocol by value staked. Its competition now comes from exchange staking products and rival receipt tokens such as Rocket Pool's rETH, and its size keeps the centralisation debate permanently open.
