About Ravencoin (RVN)

Layer-1 blockchain

Ravencoin (RVN) is a Bitcoin-derived proof-of-work chain built for one narrow job: issuing and moving assets like securities, in-game items and collectibles, rather than running general smart contracts. It launched with no premine, no ICO and no founder allocation, and RVN pays the small burn fee charged whenever a new asset is created.

The story behind Ravencoin

Ravencoin went live on 3 January 2018, chosen deliberately as Bitcoin's ninth birthday, a signal about the project's lineage and intent. There was no pre-sale and no team stash of coins waiting to be dumped — everything was mined from block one. Overstock's Medici Ventures backed the project early, drawn to its potential as rails for tokenising real-world securities long before that idea became fashionable elsewhere.

In 2020 the team switched mining algorithms to KAWPOW specifically to keep the network open to GPU miners, resisting the specialised ASIC hardware that had come to dominate Bitcoin mining and, in doing so, concentrated who could participate.

What RVN is used for

You would reach for Ravencoin if you wanted to issue a token representing a real asset — a share, a coupon, a unique collectible — without building a whole blockchain to do it. Creating an asset burns a small amount of RVN, the network's messaging layer lets issuers notify holders directly, and dividend-style payouts can be distributed automatically to everyone holding a given asset.

Mining stays accessible to ordinary GPU owners rather than requiring specialised rigs, which keeps the security budget more widely distributed than on many proof-of-work chains.

Ravencoin in the market today

Ravencoin remains a small-cap coin with a loyal GPU-mining community and a fair-launch story that is rare in a market full of pre-mined and VC-funded tokens. Its asset-issuance layer never captured anywhere near the volume that flowed to Ethereum-based token standards, and today it occupies a niche rather than a mainstream role. Anyone drawn to it for the tokenisation thesis should recognise that thesis has largely played out elsewhere.

How to buy or swap RVN

  1. Pick RVN as the asset you want to receive.
  2. Choose what you're paying with — crypto or a fiat card.
  3. Monivo compares every connected exchange and routes your order to the best available rate.
  4. Paste your wallet address and confirm — funds arrive in minutes.

The story of Ravencoin

Plenty of chains issue tokens. Ravencoin is interesting because it gave away every advantage a founding team usually keeps — and then had to live with the consequences.

Why Ravencoin exists at all

The whitepaper's framing is narrow on purpose: a peer-to-peer system for the creation and transfer of assets. Bitcoin is excellent at moving one asset and clumsy at everything else; layering token issuance onto it meant overloading transactions with data that the base protocol does not understand. Ravencoin's answer was to fork Bitcoin and make assets a first-class protocol feature instead of a convention.

The people behind it

The whitepaper is credited to Bruce Fenton and Tron Black and published in April 2018, after a January mainnet launch. The project explicitly thanks the hundreds of Bitcoin developers whose commits it inherited. There is no company, no foundation and no paid leadership: the person posting the project's own January 2018 status update on BitcoinTalk noted that he was neither the founder nor a developer, just a volunteer.

The original bet

The bet was that credibility comes from distribution. No ICO, no premine, no founder reward, no dev fund — every RVN in existence was mined. Token creation is paid for by burning 500 RVN, so the asset layer consumes the coin rather than enriching an issuer.

The turning point

Ravencoin's original x16r algorithm chained sixteen hash functions in an order that changed per block, which was meant to make purpose-built hardware impractical. It did not hold: ASICs arrived, and in April 2020 the network hard-forked to KAWPOW, a ProgPoW-style algorithm aimed squarely at consumer GPUs.

The same release quietly added two things people still use daily: BIP44 mnemonic seed phrases and message attachments for asset transfers. The project's roadmap commits to reacting if ASICs appear again, but states that no further algorithm changes are anticipated.

A detail most summaries leave out

The asset layer that justifies Ravencoin's existence did not ship with the chain. Mainnet launched in January 2018; assets went live in November, roughly ten months later. For most of its first year, Ravencoin was a fairly ordinary proof-of-work coin waiting for its own point.

The question that is still open

Volunteer governance is Ravencoin's best feature and its main risk. With no treasury and no funded team, upgrades depend on whoever shows up, and the 2020 fork demonstrated both the strength (a contested algorithm change executed without a company) and the exposure (a mandatory client update that every holder and exchange had to follow).

What this means when you swap RVN

Blocks target one minute and fees are minimal. Standard addresses start with `R`, multisig addresses with `r`, and the chain uses a Bitcoin-style fee model. Creating an asset burns 500 RVN — that cost is a protocol rule, not a service charge.

If you are restoring an old wallet, note the KAWPOW fork: pre-2020 clients follow rules the network no longer uses. Use current software, and never send RVN to a Bitcoin address, which shares the fork's lineage but not its chain.

Fees and pricing

Monivo does not add a separate platform fee. The quoted receive amount reflects the executing provider's pricing and applicable payout costs. Your sending wallet or exchange may charge its own network or withdrawal fee. The amount shown is an estimate; fixed and floating quotes follow the provider's terms.

Monivo does not add a separate platform fee. Some partner quotes include a small affiliate margin that is retained by Monivo as a referral commission; this margin is included in the rate shown, not added on top. Provider spreads and applicable network costs are also reflected in the quoted amount.

Network fees are set by the blockchain, not by Monivo. No account, no subscription and no withdrawal charge. Live support is available 24/7.

No. The project states there was no ICO, no premine, no founder allocation and no developer fund — every coin has been mined since the January 2018 launch. That is unusually clean and is central to how the community describes the project.

What does it cost to create a token on Ravencoin?

Creating an asset burns 500 RVN. The coins are destroyed rather than paid to anyone, which is how the chain prices name registration without a company collecting fees.
